Discover Vantablack, the darkest substance ever made, and see how it inspired Black Metal in the fantasy series Darker Matter.
Imagine standing before a surface so dark that your eyes cannot find its edges. That is the effect of Vantablack, one of the blackest substances ever created. Built from tiny carbon nanotubes, it absorbs almost all light, creating a sense of depthless void. This strange material has fascinated artists, designers, and scientists and it also helped inspire the magical Black Metal in the fantasy series, Darker Matter.
A substance so black, and formless, must surely hold untold powers? Not found in nature, unique, maybe even a little sinister? Could there be a connection with Dark Matter? These are the thoughts that took shape in my imagination and Black Metal was born.
But what is Vantablack?

Vantablack is made up of carbon nanotubes that absorb exceptionally high levels of visible light. It is widely believed to be one of the darkest pigments created. Uniquely, when applied to three-dimensional objects, Vantablack gives the illusion of a two-dimensional surface or void space.
